Decay of Nations III After Actions Review
by tawfunguy on Aug.27, 2009, under SCENARIO PAINTBALL
Well, now that the event is done I thought I would take a few moments to give a bit of an After Actions Review of my experience at Decay of Nations III.
I was the General for the UNA army so this will be coming from that perspective.
When we rolled in on Friday, it was great to see many familiar faces…. some from recent and some from the past. We camped over by the SW Regs which was a blast because they provided a lot of entertainment! LOL Friday late afternoon I got with the staff to do a walk through with me to show me where the bases were and such…. where they had our base (UNA) was originally positioned in Laos…. however, even they could not find the UNA base because of how dense the vegetation was… we were out there for over an hour and after getting lost, it was decided to move the UNA base over near the POW camp… however, the whole field was still in play. After seeing where everything was on the field, we headed up to Clowntown for some grub. All I can say is, THANK YOU to the Clowns for cooking up grub for everyone… that was spot on! I then picked up my player packet and paint. It was also VERY humid which had me concerned about the paint. Pogo NTC (Ekron General) and I had a chance to hang out as well and went over General stuff for awhile…. good times.
Saturday
As I was prepping to head to the stage for the morning briefing, the heat and humidity was really uncomfortable. Again, my concern was for the paint and how it would shoot. In my experience, even high quality paint has a problem with getting gummy, bouncing and not breaking when the temperature and humidity is high….. especially when the paint is in that type of temperature environment for any good length of time. We headed to the stage and had the safety briefing with everyone then after the meeting, I got a chance to address the UNA troops then prep for game on. As we were getting ready at our CP for game on, I was very much concerned about no arm band tape. I was told that we would just be using the Player ID cards as the identifying factor, however, we quickly learned within moments of game on that that was ineffective as players from the previous DONs had past Player ID Cards on them…. so there were players that had both Blue and Red cards. We also saw and heard that there was a considerable amount of friendly fire because people could not tell who was on what side. I would definitely agree that there should be some better marking of the players on this. There were little issues here and there throughout the day from a logistical side but nothing that could be handled. One issue that we had was our tanks…. OCMI did an awesome job bring out their two cool tanks but we quickly found that there was a problem with how to insert them without….. for a while, players on the Ekron side were rightfully frustrated because they (The Ekron players) owned the city and the tanks would get inserted at the city and that was not fair to the Ekron players. Pogo wanted the tanks pulled and we even had a meeting with Dennis to determine what to do with the tanks. Later in the day, the OCMI tank drivers were able to maneuver their tanks through the brush all the way back to our base to respawn. We were stoked to see that the tanks could finally be used and that because they had to drive all the way back and wait 10 minutes to respawn that it made things more fair. BOTH generals had tanks/vehicles (motorized and non motorized) and BOTH generals had Metadyne rocket launchers issued to them by the field to kill the tanks. It would have been nice to see more launchers out on the field though. Again, these are minor issues. The UNA finally really gelled as a force by mid afternoon on Saturday as UNA players stepped up more for role playing and missions. Many of them were gracious enough to allow me the opportunity to have them do some crazy missions and such out in the middle of no where like out at FO. My army had a lot of heart especially after being swarmed on by the Ekron troops earlier in the day and despite the heat, humidity and everything else, they continued to fight on and in great spirits. Pogo NCT and I had our hands full as generals in many ways with many different challenges, but we did the best we could with what we had and I personally had a blast the entire time. By night play, I was pretty beat but was ready for the following days battle.
Sunday
Again is was a hot and humid day…. but it did not seem as bad as before. However, we do know players were having issues with the paint being gummy and bouncing. But it did not seem to stop the majority of the players from playing. Right away we had missions and role playing happening…. it was cool to see many new players and teams step up to do those things…. it wakes for great experience. The UNA army did a fantastic job scouring the field for props. By early Sunday, we had Fuel, Super Rice, 4 huge bags of “moon rocks” and 4 downed Ekron pilots….. all at one time! We also had a Nuke which we used one on Saturday and then controlled one of them on Sunday. All in all, for props, our army (The UNA) really kept their eyes open and gained control quickly of them. Both Saturday and Sunday it seemed as if the majority of the battles took place in the city (Beirut) and the village (North Vietnam) and it was cool hearing those battles happening from a distance. The final battle was a riot!!! T-Devil stepped in for Pogo for the final battle and it was awesome to see both the UNA & Ekron duking it out til the end. Ekron did a hell of a job keeping my UNA forces busy!
When the final battle (Blood Bath) was done, I wanted to make sure to congratulate and thank the Ekron army for being an incredible force to oppose as well as congratulate and thank my UNA army for being amazing army to lead.
It was great to recognize during the award ceremony those who went the extra mile and it was great to see how well the sponsors stepped up and donated the wonderful prize package that was donated for the players.
I will be getting with Dennis and Gio regarding logistical and production notes that can help make the next Decay of Nations (4) be even better!
Thanks and Happy 25th Anniversary to SC Village, Dennis and Giovanni for having such a great place to play and allowing me the opportunity to step out of a producer role and get to General! I had a fantastic time!
Thanks to Pgo NTC and ALL the players on the Ekron army for keeping me and my troops busy all weekend. You had a hell-of-a great group of teams and players and it was a pleasure to face off against you guys.
Thanks to ALL my troops on the UNA side for supporting me as your General and it was without a doubt and HONOR to serve with all of you. A General is nothing without the dedication, motivation, determination and loyalty of those that fall under his command and a General is only as good as those that serve under and with him. From the single uber-noobies, to the young teams, the seasoned ballers to the veteran scenario players, the speedballers to the MILSIMers to the OCMI tank drivers….. this victory was secured by YOU…. and it was a pleasure and an honor and I look forward to the next time when we can take to the field once again!
No matter what, no matter the issues, no matter the outcomes, etc…. take from each game whether it is a tournament, rec-day, big game, rogue game or full blown scenario…. don’t get wrapped in the small stuff and take the best experiences with you. Offer solutions to problems rather than get wrapped up in them.
Until the next time…..be safe, have fun, play honorably and see you in the middle!
Best Regards,
Damian
UNA General

WHAT IS SCENARIO - A LOOK AT A GREAT FORM OF RECREATION!
by tawfunguy on Aug.17, 2009, under Newbies, SCENARIO PAINTBALL
This is an oldie but a goodie. I posted this originally in August of 2008, but I thought it would be a good idea to bring this out from behind the passworded forums and out into the light in the wake of the survey we just posted.
What do you think? Did I hit all of the major aspects of scenario?
Make sure to pass it on to newbies who need a better explanation of what you like to do for recreation!

WHAT IS SCENARIO - A LOOK AT A GREAT FORM OF RECREATION!

This is one of the very first things a player, newbie or seasoned player alike that hears about this form of paintball or airsoft for the first time asks. Everyone has heard about the fun, exciting and often twisted tales of a weekend spent playing scenario. But actually what is it and what is all the rage?
First off, to describe scenario paintball or airsoft in one or two words, I would use “Multi-Faceted” as there are many sides to it. It is a world and sometimes animal unto itself and just when you think you have seen it all, something out of the blue will get you to go: Cool! Wow! or one one my favorites… EWW! Ha! Ha Ha! Each and every event seems to bring something very unique to it some way, shape or form….. but all-in-all a very fun way!
TAW has coined a new slogan….”Don’t Just Play the Game…. LIVE THE GAME!” and there is a reason for this. How many of us have a computer? Most everyone, right? Ok, how many of us have a computer game or two or three or…. well you get the point. Out of those games that we have, how many of them are First Person Shooter or Strategy based? Well, with scenario paintball or airsoft games, you get to put the controllers or keyboards down, get decked out in cool or goofy costumes, depending on the theme of any particular event, grab your paintball or airsoft equipment and run around wooded or urban areas shooting each other in a safe, fun, honorable and supervised environment!
That’s right, we get to step out of our mundane, chaotic and stressful lives and get to immerse ourselves in a different world for a weekend and get to blow off steam which reminds us each and every time that we can have fun again no matter our age or skill levels or what we have going on in our lives.
So, what exactly is scenario or better yet, what are some of the sides I mentioned above? Here are but a few!
1) Storylines - This is the heart of the event/game. It is the life-blood so to speak. The storyline is what helps set the stage, the time period as well as the reason why the multiple factions (two or more armies) are set to go head to head. It is the beginning of a new book that YOU and the actions and heroics, big or small, that you and your fellow players do that will flesh out the rest of the story by bringing its middle and its end and therefore completing a perfect collaboration masterpiece. Only YOU can decide the outcome and ending!
2) Characters & Role Playing - These characters are played by players like yourself that are intrigued at the notion that they can be someone else for a weekend. Whether it is a General, a Scientist, a Black Market Broker, or one of the most sought after roles… a SPY! There is almost no limit to what type of characters can be offered as each and every storyline and the genre they entail can yield all sorts of wonderful characters. What the real intriguing aspect of being a character at a scenario event is the ability to get to role-play with other player characters out on the field. No, I do not mean break out and dust off your favorite marbled 20 sided dice but rather dressing up the way you think your character would, throw in an accent if you want or a limp or something that makes your character unique and again have fun like you did when you were younger. For all intent and purposes, it is Live-Action Role Playing (LARP). Remember how we were fearless as children when we would play GI Joe, Cops & Robbers, Cowboys and Indians? Or for our gals, playing a Princess, a Rogue, etc? Well, with scenario, we take you back to that time when it was OK to unlock your imagination and bring life to it! A Role-Player/Character at a scenario event has the ability to add additional interaction to the events and even more so has the ability to help sway the out come of a game. A good role-player, not necessarily one that has experience doing it, can really throw a monkey wrench in the their foe’s plans. Anyone who wants to play a character and give Live-Action Role-Playing (LARP) or to learn more about it can just by asking! It’s just that simple!
3) Props - Ah, this is probably my favorite aspect of scenario games… the PROPS! Props are cool toys, devices, items used to help enhance the game. Depending on the genre and what the storyline might call for depends on what type of props are available for any given game. Let’s say you are playing a Sci-Fi (Science Fiction) type game in which you must locate and retrieve a Warp-Core that had been stolen from an alien vessel and must be shut down before you move it! Wow! What do you do? We, usually in a case like that there is a prop that will resemble something hi-tech with blinking, steady or pulsing lights, switches, knobs, buttons and who knows what else. It may take special keys to shut it off or unlock a panel only to reveal more challenging obstacles in order to complete your mission. Some props may be as simple as cardboard and styrofoam manipulated to form a specific shape then wrapped in gaffer’s tape (a very cool type of colored tape) and made to look like a C4 Explosive Charge, A Generator for a Processing Plant or ….. well, let’s just say there is no end to the imaginative things that can be used as props.
4) Missions - Here you go! Missions! Missions are usually issued out by your Commanding General of your army and/or by the scenario producer. A Mission is assigned a specific number, to do a specific thing, at a specific time and at a specific location. Completing it properly and on time results in earning “points” towards an over all victory and the bragging rights that go with it at the end of the event. Missions are endless in possibilities but have a basic core such as Attack, Defend, Recon/Patrol, Infiltrate, Meet & Greet, Resupply, etc. But, those are just the basics. Some missions may find you building a mock airstrip or a decontamination facility or one of the funniest ones I have seen was to build a “still” for one of our redneck or wild west based games. The faster you get missions completed and turned back in the faster you can rack up points for your side.
5) Vehicles - Yep, that’s right! In some cases, the genre of the event may call for the need for some sort of vehicle or special equipment such as a tank, a helicopter, a space ship or even artillery pieces such as a howitzer!!! All of which add yet another unique aspect to scenario and bring the extra “cool” or “wow” factor to a game. Although most fields due to insurance requirements do not allow real tanks, helicopters and the likes on a field with players, again, players are encouraged to use their imaginations and create mock representations of them to be used for the events. Some are human powered like with a bike, some are gas powered but on a small level such as a go-kart while others opt for the electrics of tricked out golf cart that has been turned into a Panzer tank or something else equally neat. Visuals…. its all about the visuals!
6) Night Play - Ok, this by far is my favorite type of play! Imagine being out on the field with nothing but the moonlight or twinkling stars to illuminate the battlefield… your heard pounding so heart it deafens you…. you creep through the field, spooked out by every shadow, every sound, every…. THHHHWWWAAAAPPPP!!!!!! Yep! You just got shot! You were so busy concentrating on the overload of other sensations that you didn’t see the player behind the bush 20 feet in front of you who’s hopper slightly glowed in the pale moon light! Oh! Wait! He may have had a slight advantage because he was using some night vision! Although it is not necessary, some players have gone out and dropped anywhere from a couple hundred bucks to who knows how much more on the ability to see at night. Want to know how to beat them or at least try to? break out one of those 10 Million Candle Beam lights! you know the ones! The one’s you see that look like they should really be put up in a light house somewhere! Light them up! Night play takes a bit to get used to, but once you have tried it, you will itching to do it again soon!
7) Camping & Camaraderie - These two are great aspects of scenario and in their own way or together, go hand in hand with scenario events. Most scenario events are usually 2-3 days long with the ability to camp throughout the weekend… usually Friday and Saturday Nights. Camping is a great way to relax and enjoy the great outdoors. Granted, sometimes we are at the mercy of weather conditions, but despite even adverse weather conditions, players from all over the state, a region or even from other parts of the globe converge together to enjoy a good camping weekend with friends (both new and old) and all while sharing war stories and such around camp-fires or lounging around in a personal or team camp site. You will find that within scenario events, even if you just meat for the first time, everyone seems to act as if they have known each other for decades. It is a very unique bond and one that is shared by those that have a passion for scenario and look to support not only the events but all those involved…. participant and production alike.
8 ) Hours of Play - Here is the pinnacle of what sets scenario events apart from normal days of play at your local playing field. Most fields have quick 15-30 minute games and usually have a lot of downtime between games. Not at scenario events! Most scenario events offer anywhere from 10-24+ hours of actual playing time! Can you imagine? Getting to play continually for hours on end and even when you need to take a break, the game, the story, the missions, the role-playing continues! Then, when you are ready, you are able to jump right back in and pick up where you last left off!
Now, as I said, these are but a few of the sides of scenario but they are the fiber of the game. Combine them altogether, coupled with your enthusiasm and excitement… then.. if that wasn’t enough, top it off with a heavy dose of bravado…. and you have THE ultimate, mind-blowing, adrenaline-pumping mix of fun found no where else but at a scenario event.
Ok, some of you might be sitting there saying, “That is all fine and dandy but I just want to shoot!” And you know what/? That is fine too! Even of after reading the above descriptions and such, if you are just wanting to “run & gun” you can do that too as scenario events cater to what YOU, the individual or team wants to do. Maybe you want to try your hand at some of what I listed… maybe you even spent countless amounts of hours planning for it. Then again, you might just want to be unleashed onto the playing field like a hurricane ripping through your foes as you laugh hysterically at their freshly painted bodies like a demented Picasso!! Either way, it is your choice and scenario events can cater to you and what it is you want to do.
With the most amount of play found anywhere, intriguing props, unforgettable characters, night play, role-playing, prizes, and much, much more… these event are not ones to be missed!
From beginning to advanced players and young and old alike, scenarios offer a challenge and fun for everyone! Are you into role-playing and want to get wrapped up into the cloak and dagger aspect of the game? Are you a mission oriented operative looking to “get the job done” and lay waste to those that find themselves in your cross-hairs? Or, are you an operative that prefers to be on the front lines while leading the charge or providing additional fire support for your fellow operatives? Or maybe, just maybe are you into just goofing off and having the most amount of fun possible, no matter what?
Then scenarios have the challenge that will put your skills and imagination to the test!
Special roles are always in effect for these event… so if you think you have what it takes… step up and sound off!
Prize drawings are usually part of the norm for scenario events and includes Free Markers, Free Tactical Equipment, Free Paint, Season Passes, Gear, and much, much more! Pre-register and be entered into the drawing for your change to win some cool stuff!

“To some, the screams heard within the jungle folds sound like an ill-fated sonnet sung by birds of a not so majestic paradise.”
The jungle is an animal unto itself… it is unforgiving and harsh. The realities of what many have witness while on tour within its shaded veil are but nightmarish glimpses of the true reality that lays waiting… to pounce like a hungry jungle cat.
It is a dark and mysterious haven to many creatures… prey and predator alike. Sound can travel kilometers with the sharpness of a needle and in an instant, fall deadly silent as if all life vacated into a vacuum of nothingness.
Here, the weather is as cruel a mistress as the jungle herself… one minute mild and temperate, the next sweltering, sticky, sweat drenching hot as if its existence was forged within the pit of Hades… only to be followed by torrential down pours that leave their icy clutches holding on like a reaper’s grasp.
Disease in such the likes as malaria and typhoid spread by mosquitoes and other parasitic creatures would become unwelcomed prophets foretelling of an almost inevitable end to those that draw their lottery. This truly was Hades on Earth and those poor souls that found themselves engulfed within its hellish embrace, were nothing more than shells of men whose life was merely a rented existence with a flickering “no vacancy” sign looming overhead.
This police action was classified as a conflict… that was nothing more than a sugar coated, down-graded, politically incorrect nickname for war… and a war this was. However, in most wars… there are clear battle lines, but, on this battleground, the lines were obscurely hidden within the dense jungle.
As darkness fell yet again upon the dense foliaged landscape, its sable slumbered shroud was prematurely disturbed by the amber wavy glow of aerial flares which gave birth to specter-like shadows that stretched out in ghoulish shapes across the illuminated battlefront. As eyes adjusted to the abrupt invasion of light and shadows… one could see the ground pulsating and moving… or so it seemed. When the irises of sleep deprived eyes adjusted and fixated on the not so distant front, the horrific realization that the perceived wind swept terra was actually enemy forces on the advance! Like an army of ants, they moved silent, they moved fast, and their numbers seemed to have no end.
“LOCK and LOAD, MAGGOTS! SPOOKS IN THE WIRE!” a grungy, war torn commander named LTC Horace Wright whose weather-beaten skin and steely gaze commandingly shouted to his troops who were strategically poised in hasty fighting positions along the hillside… sounded their compliance with the metallic, grinding slides and clicks of their weapons. Like an over-wound rubber band… its breaking point was soon near.
Then, as if all the power of Thor, was unleashed… IT BEGAN! Tracer rounds darted across the field, pinpointing their deadly paths until their intended targets were methodically terminated. However, the oncoming horde of “Cong” are not easily subdued as their bait and hook tactics and use of rockets that pierced the battle air like rigid serpents caused their fair share of casualties.
This was a symphony of orchestrated chaos. As the hours of warfare continued through the night, a forward scout reported over the tactical radio, “THE CONG WAS SEEN SHIFTING AND ON THE MOVE TO THE NORTH – REQUEST F.R.A.G.O.!”
“DELTA ONE NINER, THIS IS CAMELOT. HOLD ONE.” The radio-telephone operator (RTO) of the Tango-Charlie Element squawked back on the tactical field radio
The RTO then turned to LTC Wright, but before he could get the attention of the commander, another transmission came across the supposed secure frequency.
“DELTA ONE NINER… SHADOW RETREATING FORCES AND REPORT ON HOUR… CAMELOT… THIS IS VALKYRIE-ONE… INBOUND TO YOUR LOCATION.”
“What the %@$# was that?” LTC Wright questioned. The RTO looked just as puzzled. “I want to know who the hell that is and now!” the commander ordered to the RTO.
The RTO immediately flipped through his RTO Code Book and transmitted.
“VALKYRIE ONE… AUTHENTICATE ROMEO ECHO FIVE ZULU OVER” The RTO commanded over the radio. However, after repeating that radio command a half-dozen times, no response was received.
Then, the sound of a strange radio jamming signal indicated to the RTO and the LTC (Lieutenant Colonel) who listened in that they were going to have more trouble on their plate. The RTO quickly started clicking through other known secure channels, but to no avail as all the other frequencies were jammed.
As they went to turn their attentions back on the “Cong”, that all too familiar hushed silence befell them. The amber glow of the annoying and often hindering aerial flares flickered into fallen, glowing embers. Nothing could be heard.
“I don’t like this sir!” The RTO quietly barked with a nervous tone.
Just then, a final shot rang out and the RTO looked horrified at the LTC then at his own chest… that final shot found its mark and the RTO fell to the jungle floor.
As the LTC looked down at the RTO, the tactical radio that was attached to the back of the now lifeless RTO, crackled and a transmission could be heard.
“CAMELOT THIS IS VALKYRIE ONE – F.R.A.G.O. OVER”
The LTC, still somewhat distracted by what just happened, quickly reached in his fatigue top pocket and pulled out a small, tattered notepad and pencil then picked up the hand-mic of the tactical radio and depressed the push to talk button.
“VALKYRIE ONE THIS IS CAMELOT – AUTHENTICATE ROMEO ECHO FIVE ZULU OVER.”
The LTC sat in silence waiting for the authentication transmission to be returned. However, what he got was not what he expected.
“CAMELOT THIS IS VALKYRIE ONE – NEGATIVE ON YOUR AUTHENTICATION ROMEO ECHO FIVE ZULU – OUTDATED. F.R.A.G.O. AS FOLLOWS – RENDEZVOUS WITH DELTA ONE NINER AT GRID BRAVO QUEBEC TWO FIVE SEVEN ONE – LOCATE AND SECURE PERIMETER AROUND CODENAME HALEY’S COMET – WE ARE INBOUND FOR RETRIEVAL.” The familiar but unknown voice commanded.
“This is BS!” The LTC said in passing to himself. “This doesn’t feel right.” He then muttered to himself as he pulled the tactical radio off the fallen RTO.
“GUTIERREZ! ON ME!” The LTC shouted to a young soldier. “YOU’RE MY NEW RTO! LET’S GO! MOVE IT!” The LTC barked then tossed the radio to the reluctantly compliant soldier.
“Alright boys, here’s the deal… we’ve got something coming down the pipe and it don’t look good.” He continued.
One of the soldiers who was near the LTC in a make shift hasty fighting position questioned in an almost sarcastic tone, “Worst than the Cong, sir?”
“AT EASE CORPORAL! – Alright, let’s pack it up and proceed to grid coordinates BRAVO QUEBEC TWO FIVE SEVEN ONE. Staggered formation, 10 meter intervals… keep your eyes open…. LET’S MOVE!” The LTC commanded.
Meanwhile, somewhere in another part of the jungle, the commander, General Yu Chow Phat of the Cong Phat Army sat within his hidden lair, meticulously looking through the day’s spoils of war. He smiled as items of a personal nature from eliminated enemies brought him an almost sadistic pleasure.
Just then, his tactical radio who was being monitored by a very young Cong RTC crackled with a transmission with an unfamiliar voice.
Who is the strange voice behind the transmission? Who or what is the codename Haley’s Comet? What is about to befall both armies? Will the Tango-Charlie Element comply with the foreign orders and what will they find? What transmission was given to the Cong Phat Army? Will the Tango-Charlie Element pursue and eliminate the CPA? Or, will the CPA under the command of General Yu Chow Phat suppress, subdue and destroy the Tango-Charlie Element?
Only YOU can decide that!

Ok, well….. we are getting down to crunch time and I still ahve a heap of parts, pices and junk scattered all over my livingroom as I am STILL trying to get my mech together in time for our Battlegrounds: West Coast Mech Wars event in 2 weeks!
So, we jumped on the project this past weekend and had back to back EPIC failures on the body due to lack of sleep and major focus issues (too much laughing) LOL!
Well, that doesn’t leave in the place that I want, however, I know me well enough to know that I will pull it out in the end (or so I hope) even if my weapons for the mech are nothing more than blowguns and a mech held together with dict tape and zip ties!
But all in all, this game is going to be a lot of fun as it seems despite the economy and all the crap happening around us as a whole, everyone’s spirits are up and a lot of people are doing whaat they can to “get into” the game!
I will post up more as I get more done with the mech!
